NO. 5 SCHEME IS TO BE CONTINUED.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. In an official statement made yesterday the Prime Minister announced that the No. 5 Scheme of the Unemployment Board would be temporarily continued. Mr Forbes stated that one of the first duties of Parliament woxild be to consider the question of funds for the L'nemployment Board and the Government intended to bring down legislation at the earliest opportunity in the coming session with this end in view. In the meantime, however, as a result of earnest representations and with a view to relieving the unfortunate position in which many people were placed through lack of employment, the Government had decided upon the continuance of the scheme until such time as Parliament could deal with the problem. Additional finance, which is based on the large numbers of unemployed now to be dealt with, is essential. The Government realised, said Mr Forbes, that responsibility for stability and increase of unemployment funds would rest upon Parliament, and as the session will commence within a week he had every hope that reasonable provision would be made so that relief could be continued. All men affected by the reinstatement of No. 5 scheme are requested to report to their foremen on Monday morning in the usual manner.
