A Suggestion for some Unemployed.
It Occurs to Me,
<pHE CORRESPONDENT who suggested yesterday that the unemployment situation called for more independent thinking on the part of the men out of work, puts his finger on the great weakness in systems of dole and Government relief. It is true, of course, that many men are thinking, and thinking desperately, but there are also many Mr Micawbers in this city, who are just waiting for something to turn up. But in times like these opportunities do not fall like plums from the branch; they have to be made. It should not be supposed, for instance, that the opportunities for the man with dusters, polish and elbowgrease are exhausted yet. Windows cleaned once get dirty again, and the same applies to motor-cars. Of the hundreds of cars parked outside Lancaster Park on Saturdays there must be some that need cleaning, and many sportsmen owners who would be ready to have them cleaned while they enjoyed the match. A man might clean two cars thoroughly in half-an-hour, or give half-a-dozen cars a “ lick and a promise ” in that time, and a few men organised to solicit jobs as the cars arrived, might work a team and turn the afternoon to some account. Honest work begets more work, and tlje hard thinker never stands still. B.E.S.
