HELP WANTED FOR MILLERTON PEOPLE.
MR HOLLAND APPEALS TO EDUCATION BOARD. Per Press Association. NELSON, June 10. Mr Holland, M.P. for Buller, and leader of the Labour Party, wired to the Nelson Education Board that so desperate was the position at Millerton that parents had decided to remove their children from school unless free meals were provided. The chairman of the board, the lion W. 11. M’lntyre, said there was much more justification for relief than there was a year ago. .Mr Smith: Why? The mines are not closed and do not supply as much coal as the Government has ordered. Why is it that coal is not forthcoming and there is distress among the miners? The chairman replied that apparently Millerton coal was not suitable for the railways. The Millerton mine had worked only forty-nine days this year. He knew there was considerable distress to-day. I low far the question of relief came within the jurisdiction of the board he was not in a position to say. <>n the motion of Mr Ilarkness, the chairman was deputed to interview the Minister of Education and sec what could be done.
