R.S.A. GETS GRANT OF £2OO FOR RELIEF.

ARRANGEMENTS MADE FOR SUBSIDY SCHEME. At the fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association the following members were present:—Messrs F. T. Read (chairman), E. W. Smith, 11. Fleck. G. H. Dabourn, E. G. Queree, G. W. Lloyd, C. Chisnall, J. S. Chisholm, T. L. Drummond. G. A. Hayden, A. L. Emerson, H. w. Wilkinson and Neale (Springs), Colonel F. W. Dawson and the secretary. A letter was received from the Canterbury Patriotic Fund, enclosing a cheque for £2OO, being a further grant from the National War Funds Council for the relief of distress amongst unemployed returned soldiers. The Sumner Borough Council made application for a grant of £SO, subject to £1 for £1 subsidy, for the relief of unemployment in the borough. This was left in the hands of the chairman of the Unemployment Committee and the secretary, with power to act. The Waimakariri River Trust wrote i advising that it was obtaining a report from the Resident Engineer regarding the possibility of accepting a subsidy for relief of unemployment. The Ricearton Borough Council wrote advising that the association’s offer of a subsidy would be considered when the estimates were under consideration. The New Brighton Borough Council wrote advising that, owing to want of finance it was unable to take advantage of the association’s offer of a grant to be subsidised by the council £1 for £l. It was decided thet. if any applications were received from local bodies for grants before the next meeting of tho executive, they be left in the hands of the president and chairman of the Unemployment Committee and secretary, with power to act. A soldier settler at Lees Valley wrote asking if the association could assist the settleTS in obtaining bridges over the Whistler and Upper Ashley Rivers. This matter was placed in the hands of the Unemployment Committee with a view to interviewing the Canterbury Progress League to ascertain what steps it had taken. The National Peace Council wrote asking if the association would appoint a representative to attend a meeting to be held on June 19 in connection with world peace. The president and vicepresident were appointed. Memorial Column Fuad. The president and Mr Lloyd reported having attended a meeting of subscribers to the Memorial Column Fund, and it was decided to ask Mr Gould if he would attend a special meeting of the executive to be held for the purpose of explaining details as to his scheme for a memorial and grant for the relief of distressed soldiers. Headquarters forwarded . remits received from various associations throughout the Dominion, to be placed before the fifteenth annual general meeting of the Dominion Council, to be held in Wellington on JPne 23. They were fully discussed, and either supported or left in the hands of delegates to vote at their discretion. The Westport R.S.A. wrote asking if arrangements could be made for a delegate going to Wellington to represent, them and place remits from their branch before the conference. The president was deputed to represent Westport. A circular was received from headquarters notifying that economic pensions would be reduced by 10 per cent from June 1 Delegates to conference were given discretionary powers regarding voting on this matter.
