MEETING OF GIRL GUIDE COMMITTEES IS HELD.

t A special meeting was held vesterday ;of the proficiency badge examiners, r the local Commissioners and Pack - Committees of the Girl Guides Movement, when many matters dealing -with Guide control were discussed. Miss Bromley- Cocks, the Deputy Commissioner, who presided, stated that the movement had been given a great impetus by the recent rally. Miss C. O’Rourke, of the Canterbury Provincial Executive, dealt briefly with the Brownie activities, and Mrs B. B. Irwin, Commissioner of the East Christchurch Company, with the benefits to be derived from Guide camps. The following report on the proficiency badge examinations was made: * Prior to July, 1930, the arrangements for badge examinations were in The hands of Badge Committees in their respective districts, but owing to the increased number of applications and the time demanded of the various oadge secretaries and committees, the Provincial Executive deemed it advisable that arrangements for all badge work be made through the provincial secretary. The executive, having obtained larger premises, has been able to allot a room for the holding of some of the examinations, and it has proved to be most convenient to examiners and candidates. Under the present method of examination, a considerable amount of time has been saved, as one examiner is now able to take candidates from all districts, whereas under the former district method three examinations were required.

“The executive is grateful to all who have consented to act as ex;

ers, and greatly appreciates the interest they have taken in the movement in giving their valuable time. The executive also desires to thank all those who have given their services so willingly in instructing the Guides and preparing them for examinations, notably the nurses of the Plunket Society, the St John Ambulance Brigade and members of the Christchurch Fire Brigade. In nearly all examinations, 80 per cent of marks is required for a pass, and it is gratifying to note that the percentage of failures has been remarkably small. The executive desires the examiners to help in maintaining the standard of proficiency by adhering to this rule, as it is for the good of the candidates and the movement generally.

‘ Owing to preparation for the rally in March, there were no examinations for three months, but for the remaining seven months of the period examinations in thirty-four subjects have been held, and 683 proficiency badges have been awarded, as follows:—Pathfinders, 19; child nurse, 30; domestic service, 55; cooks, 77; dairymaids, 15; housecraft, 8; fireman’s, 12; folk dancer, 31; sick nurse, 4; swimmers, 13; life-saver, 1; motorist. 1; milliner* 4: laundress, 24; -knitter, 2; ambulance*, 3b; friend to animals, 2; horsewoman 4; sportswoman, 02; athletes, 71.;’ cyclists, 49; needlewoman, 38; scribes 4; housekeeper, 8; home-maker 39 • cobbler, 3; gymnast, 5; toymakcr, 5; pioneer, 4; probationer, 5; naturalist 1; signaller, 1; health, 24.”
