MEMORIAL TO LEADER OF WORKERS UNVEILED.
A photograph of the late Mr F. R. Cooke, for many a leader of the Socialist and Trades Union movement in Christchurch was unveiled on Saturday night in the Trades Hall. Soon after Mr Cooke’s death, a fund was inaugurated to perpetuate his memory and, it was announced on Saturday, the fund totalled £404 12s 6d. This .was used to pay Mr Cooke’s hospital expenses, to redeem a mortgage on his home, and to erect a tombstone on his grave. The surplus, £25, was handed over to Mrs Cooke. Mr J. Shankland, president of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, presided on Saturday night, and the photograph was unveiled by Mr J. A. M’Cullough. Other speakers were: Messrs E. J. Howard, M.P., IT. Worrall, who came to New Zealand by the same vessel as Mr Cooke, Miss Robinson, on behalf of the Clothing Trades Union, of which Mr Cooke was secretary for many years, Mr F. M. Robson, one of the oldest members of the Trades and Labour Council, and Mr J. Roberts, of the Clothing Trades Union. Thanks on behalf of Mrs Cooke and family were returned by Mr Fred Cooke, a son of the late Mr F. R. Cooke.
