A Fatal Error On The Part Of Men.
It Occurs T o Me.
JJOW FATAL it is to judge all women by one. The ex-police officer who bases his condemnatioh of the woman detective on his wife’s dislike for an ugly face is not alone in the masculine failing of generalising from one experience with the sex. Into this error fall also the jilted youth who cries “ women are the d ,’’ and the lover who apotheosizes them above all living things.
The same company also claims the solicitor who declares: “Women, with a sweet trust in human nature, believe implicitly what is told them." “ Nonsense,” his neighbour may say, “ women are always suspicious, designing creatures.” Such confusion, I sometimes fear, must be laid at the door of monogamy. I doubt if the quick-change movie star and Reno divorcee would give any of these answers, for women are as various in type as the months of the year, and some of those types as variable as May weather. But women have need to be adaptable, and they have used this very gift of adaptability to the confusion of men who generalise, and to the success of their own sex in widening spheres of activity. This is the reason why some women may be found who would make excellent detectives. B.E.S.
