THIEVES ACTIVE IN THE SUBURBS.

MR D. F. GLANVILLE’S SHOP AGAIN BURGLED. Four attempts were made to break and enter shops in the suburbs of t hristchurch last evening, but in only one case were the thieves successful in effecting their purpose. The similarity of the attempts gives the impression that they are all the work of the same men, who have been operating in Christchurch suburbs for some weeks. The successful attempt last evening was on the chemist’s shop of Mr D. F. Glanville, at 60, Holm wood Road. The burglary was very roughly done, the glass panel of the door being apparently kicked in. The thieves did not disturb anything in the shop, going straight to the till, from which they took a small sum in stamps and small change. In all particulars the break was identical with the one committed exactly three weeks before at the same shop. The principal loss to Mr Glanville was the gold lettering on the glass plate that was broken in. The other attempts, one on a Self- j Help store in Colombo Street, Syden- j ham, one in a tobacconist’s in Riccar- ; ton Road, and one in Linwood, were similarly executed, a glass panel be-! ing broken in each case. Strangely, ! as the police view it, the shops appar- j ently had not been entered and nothing was taken. The police are not satisfied as to whether these attempts are really the work of burglars or merely mischief. Considering the number cf similar cases of recent date they are inclined to view it as mischief, though it may be that in each case the thieves were frightened off. In the case of Mr Glanville’s shop, a resident on the other side of the road declares that he heard a noise at 2 am. like the sound of a shot, but thought that it was the explosion of a motor-cycle.
