MAORI GIVES HIS LIFE TO SAVE SON.

CRUSHED BY CART WHILE TRYING TO STOP HORSE. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, April 1. How a Maori lost his own life in attempting to save his adopted infant son at Parihaka was related at an inquest last week, held by Mr R. W. Tate, S.M., regarding the death of Whetu Moeahu, who was run over by a cart and died in New Plymouth Hospital. John Stubbington, of Parihaka, said he was working in a paddock when an unattended horse and cart came across from the side of the roadway, the horse bolting. At the gate leading to the roadway the horse stumbled and fell and a child was heard crying. Whetu was lying in the paddock, said witness, and was quite sensible. He said that he thought his ribs had been broken. A trace chain had broken and the horse had played up and broken off, said Whetu. The child fell out of the cart and Whetu tried to save the child, but was crushed beneath the wheel of the vehicle in his attempt. There was a load of potatoes on the cart. The child was thrown clear and not injured in any way.
