POLICE VISIT HOTEL AT GOVERNOR'S BAY.

At a sitting of the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court this morning:— Ronald George Bain, Walter Ross, Charles Johns, Alfred Gordon, Richard Nome, Austin Bowen and Douglas Miller were charged with being unlawfully on the licensed premises of the Ocean View Hotel, Governor’s Bay, on Sunday, March 1. Mr H. A. Young, S.M., was on the Bench. The defendants did not appear. Sergeant Dunlop said that, accompanied by two constables he visited the hotel, lie found the defendants in the bar. Four of them had liquor in front of them. Each defendant was convicted and fined £2 and costs. For entering an hotel during the currency of a prohibition order, John Arnell was convicted and fined £1 and costs. For procuring liquor he was fined £L and costs. HOTEL-KEEPER HAS LICENSE ENDORSED. George Columbus, licensee of the Ocean View Hotel, Governor's Bay, was charged in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr H. A. Young, S.M., that on Sunday, March 1, he unlawfully sold liquor. Columbus was further charged with opening the premises for the sale of liquor and with exposing liquor for sale. He was similarly charged in respect to Sunday, March 22. Mr Holmes appeared on behalf of Columbus and pleaded guilty on all charges. Mr Holmes said that the hotel had been well conducted during the past four years, and the sale of the hotel was pending. On the charge of selling liquor on March 1, defendant was convicted ai»d fined £5 and costs 10s, and on each of the other charges in respect of Marqh. he was convicted and ordered to pay costs 10s. For selling liquor on March 22, Columbus was convicted and fined £lO and costs 10s, and his license was ordered to be endorsed. He was ordered to pay costs 10s on each of the other two charges.
