OVERSEAS VISITORS ARRIVE BY ULIMAROA.
(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, Mar qh 31. The Ulimaroa arrived at Auckland from Sydney shortly before 10 a.m. She carried 175 passenger— in both classes. Amongst the travellers were several from overseas who are on a world tour, and many have come out from Home via Australia. Captain J. A. Clegg is an Indian Army officer who is on twelve months' furlough. lie has spent twelve days in Australia, and will be a week here, visiting Rotorua, Wairakei and Tongariro National Park. Leaving by the Aorangi, Captain Clegg will spend a week in Honolulu l>efore proceeding to North America and then to England. Mr 11. E. White, the Sydney and New Zealand architect who won the competition for the design of the Dilworth School, has come across on business. Incidentally. Mr White, who is interested in racehorses, has brought over three brood mares with him.
“If the payments to unemployed on local body relief works suffer a 10 per cent reduction—from los 4d to 13s 9*d —why not reduce the unemployment levy accordingly?” This is the demand of the Christchurch Group, Communist Party. Some of the local unemployed are also going to make a demand to the Minister of Labour (the Hon S. G. Smith) for a grant of £IO,OOO for Canterbury in order to provide clothing for the men during the coming winter. In the event of their request being refused, the unemployed, it is stated, will work for four days, and then make demonstrations and go to the Hospital Board for .sustenance.
