THE MUNICIPAL ROLL SHOWS NO INCREASE.
Unless there is a substantial increase in the number of new enrolments during the next few days, it seems unlikely that the roll to be used at the municipal elections on Wednesday, May 6. will be any larger than that used two years ago. The time for receiving enrolments' defiimelv expires on Wednesday, April 8, at 5 p.m., and the Easter holidays intervene. This year the t itv Council has not followed the policy adopted two years ago of sending out canvassers to secure enrolments, that duty having been left to the party organisations. Consequently, it is believed that there are still a large number of people eligible to vote who have not yet enrolled. The Citizens’ Association and the Labour Representation Committee have both been active of late, but they have not been able to carry out the work with the thoroughness with which it was done two years ago. The main roll this year contains 45,716 names, compared with a total of 40,484 two years ago. However, there were 10,165 names on the supplementary roll in 1929, and so far this year the number of supplementary enrolments received is about 35d0 only. The large number of names on the main roll is due chiefly to the fact that three supplementary rolls were prepared for by-elections last year. Changes <>f ownership, removals and deaths have resulted in a considerable number of names being removed from the roll, but persons who were enrolled two years ago and have not changed their addresses have been left on the roll irrespective of whether they voted at the last election.
