TN LANCASHIRE carrying a potato is supposed to ward off rheumatism. One man has had his potato for fifteen months: it has become a small black object, looking at first sight like an old coin. Those who “run” the new clinics for treating rheumatism are often asked by patients if potatoes prevent or help to cure it. Compare witk this curious belief the popular notion that tomatoes cause cancer. Outside the Cancer Hospital in Brompton Road, London, were notices forbidding visitors taking tomatoes to patients.
