Mr A. T. Donnelly, who has been on a visit to Wellington, returned to Christchurch yesterday morning. Messrs M. R. Evans (Holland) and C. W. Aitken (Boston, Mass.) are amongst those staying at Warner’s Hotel. A presentation of a gold-mounted fountain pen was made to Constable A. G. Beard, of Newton (Auckland) by Sergeant B- Thompson at the Newton station last week. Constable Beard has been transferred to Christchurch. Dr J. Hight,' Rector of Canterbury College, and Professor T. A. Hunter, of Victoria College, have been selected by the University of New Zealand to represent the University at the Congress of Universities of the Empire to be held in London and Edinburgh next July. They contemplate leaving New Zealand early in May. Mr A. P. Harper, president of the New Zealand Alpine Club, will leave Wellington this week to open the memorial hut erected at the de la Beche Corner, in memory of the victims of the Tasman Glacier disaster last year. The ceremony will be performed on Easter Sunday. Second-Lieutenant R. C. Queree, New Zealand Staff Corps, having completed his training at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and his attachment to the First Battalion, the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, has been posted to the Headquarters Training Depot, Trentham, with the rank of lieutenant. Mr A. P. Opportunity was taken by Sir Thomas Sidey, in the Legislative Council on Friday afternoon, to congratulate the Speaker (Sir Walter Carncross) on the celebration, that day of his seventy-sixth birthday. Sir Thomas extended congratulations to Lady Carncross, whose birthday anniversary also occurred on Friday. Messrs F. M. Robson and J. Cox have been appointed delegates from the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council to attend the annual Trades Council Conference to be held in Wellington on Thursday. Mr Robson will also represent the Bootmakers’ Union at the annual conference of the Labour Party which begins in Wellington on Monday.
