SOCIAL GATHERINGS OF THE PAST WEEK.
A “Variety” Evening. Last evening at her home, 623, Gloucester Street, Miss Florence Johns entertained a number of friends at a “ variety ” evening, given in honour of Miss Annie O’Connell, whose marriage is to take place shortly. An enjoyable programme of musical, vocal and elocutionary items and competitions had been arranged, and the guest of honour was the recipient of many useful gifts. Items were contributed by the following:—Pianoforte, Miss Scott: vocal, Misses M. Reader and E. James*, elocutionary, Misses G. O’Connell arid H. Sierakowski. Competitions were won by Miss P. Hogg and Miss E. James.. Among those present were:—Mesdarnes Johns, Mitchell (Wellington), Schur macher, Leisch, Redpath, Orr and M’Gee; Misses Annie O’Connell, Gladys O’Connell, Scott (Blenheim), Rosa James, Phyllis Hogg, Eunice James, Madge Reader, Eileen, Butterfield, Kathleen Redpath, Florence, Eileen and Monica Johns. Kitchen Evening. Miss Rene Cross, whose marriage takes place shortly, was the guest of honour at a kitchen evening given by Miss C. C. Davis ,at her Jiome in Flarakeke Street, Riccarton. A pleasant evening was spent in dancing and competitios. Miss Cross was the recipient of many useful gifts. Those present included:—Mesdarnes Cross and. Campbell; Misses Rene Gross, Gladys Cross, Ella Taylor, Barbara Leslie, Livqni Campbell, Gwen Sinclair, and Lyla Marriott. Social Evening. A party of friends was entertained at the home of Mr and Mrs Lawrence, St Albans, the evening being spent in games, dancing and competitions. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs M’Lean. The winners of the competitions were Mr K. Hyde and Mr E. M’Kaskell. Those present included: Mr and Mrs Lawrence, Mr and Mrs M’Kay, Mrs M’Lean and Mrs M*Arthur, Misses Ivy Lawrence, Eileen Collie, Rona Weston, Doris M’Kaskell. Flora M’Kay, Emily Breitmeyer, Joan Robinson, Margaret M’Kay, May Searle, May Phillips and Blanche Messrs G. Lawrence, A: Boag, C. Lawrence, E. M’Kaskell, E. Crossley, A. Jones. D. Turner, K. Hyde, M. Phillips K. M’Kay. . Cabin Tea. • Mrs C. A. Myhre and Mrs: L. V. Cordery gave an enjoyable :: “cabin tea” 1 at Ballentyne's on Saturday morning, for Mrs J. Catherwood and Miss Maude Catherwood, who will leave shortly for a trip, to England. VaseS of scarlet geraniums were ‘ artistically arranged on the tables and Easter egg favours were placed for leach guest. The guests of i honour received .many useful gifts for their cabin. Among-those present were:—Mesdarnes Catherwood J. Duncan, Heeney, Kennedy, G.Gardner, W, Drayton,. Flesher, P. Hollander, G. A. Myhre, L. L. Cordery, Misses Bates (2), Fryer, M. Thompson arid Balkipd (2). Pantry Afternoon.
Miss Kathleen Gibson, whose marriage takes place this week, was recently given a pantry.afternoon by Mrs Frank M’Arthur at her home at Harewood. During the afternoon items .was given by Mrs Roy Mackay, Mrs F.. M’Arthur and Mrs Harold FordMrs F. EurrelL was the winner of an interesting competition. The brideeleCt was presented with a recipe book in which all the ladies present wrote a well-tried recipe. Those who enjoyed Mrs . M’Arthur’s hospitality included: —; Mesdarnes F. Burrell, H. Gibson, Thompson, A. Ford, S. Farquhar, F. M’Donald, T. Cumming,. W. Boyce, L. L. Jones, Roy Mackay, Misses F. Jones, Kathleen Gibson and N. Reece. Dance-at Burwood.
Miss J. Chaplin. Mr A. Sparks and Miss A. Falconer were the accompanists. The winners of the competitions were, Mr and Mrs Chaplin, Miss J. Chaplin, Mr A- Sparkes and Mr R. Godfrey. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs Chaplin, Mr and Mrs F. Platt, Mr and Mrs M. Clark, Mesdames C. Falconer, J. Chisnall. E. Drapper. L. Falconer, and Olliver, Misses M. Platt, A. Falconer, J. Chaplin, D. and H. Platt, Messrs A. Phillips, B. Platt, A. Sparks, R. Godfrey, Sayers, R. and A. Clarke. Gift Evening. The management and staff of Blackwell Motors, Ltd., gave an enjoyable kitchen evening recently to Miss Eva Cucas, who has been on the staff for several years and is to be married shortly. The managing director, Mr W. F. Blackwell, on behalf of the management, presented Miss Lucas with a very handsome dinner service, and many useful gifts were given by the staff. A particularly beautiful art tray was presented by Mr A. Mangin on behalf of the staff of Blackwell Motors, Ltd., Culverden. In the course of the evening several complimentary tributes were paid by members of the staff. An enjoyable supper was served, after which dancing and singing were continued till a late hour. A pleasing feature of the proceedings was the splendid performance of the jazz band, formed by members of the staff.
