GARDEN PARTY HELD AT “MILLBROOK.”

PARLIAMENTARY union MEMBERS ENTERTAINED The members of the Christchurch Parliamentary Union were the guests ,of Mr Heathcote Helmore on Saturdav afternoon, when a garden party was held in the grounds of “ Millbrook,” Helmore’s Road, Fendalton. During the afternoon Mr H. G. Livingstone, the president of the Canterbury Reform League, at the invitation of the president, Mr E. IF. Cooke, addressed the members of the union. Mr Livingstone congratulated Mr Cooke upon the inauguration of the movement. He stressed the fact that, in comparison with the young folk of thirty years ago, who were sometimes sent out to work at the age of twelve and fourteen, most young people nowadays led lives sheltered by their parents and the Government—as represented by free education—until they reached their majority, when they were faced—without preparation—with the problem of political responsibility. Mr Livingstone concluded by saying that any movement which encouraged the public generally, and young men and women in particular, to educate themselves politically, deserved encourage ment, and that he personally was willing to do all in his power to help and support “the union. The president, on behalf of the members present, thanked Mr Livingstone and expressed the appreciation they all felt at Mr Helmore’s generous invitation.

Among those present were:—Mrs M. M. Gard’ner, Misses Anderson, Thurs* ton, Blamires, Wilkins, Harding, Bates, Sierakowski and Harrison; Messrs Heathcote Helmore, FI. G. Livingstone, A. A. M’Lachlan, E. FI. Cooke, Harman. Perry, Reeves, Farthing, Ashton, Perry and O’Neil.
