AN APPEAL TO REASON.
FORBES has taken up a dignified and a determined attitude in declaring that if the House will not support his Finance Bill he will step aside and let others govern, rather than be forced into a course of inaction “ that would bring greater disaster upon the country.” He has pointed out that the Labour attitude has been made clear to everybody in Parliament and out of Parliament, and the next business is to take a vote on his proposals. His suggestion is a reasonable one. He is entitled to fair treatment. The Labour Party know very well that they are merely delaying a decision, and that their stonewall is merely a theatrical effort to show that they are prepared to die in the last ditch. In the process they are delaying earthquake legislation and precluding the general discussion of the economic difficulties of the country. No party in the House to-day would dare to precipitate a general election before November, and the only alternative is the adoption of Mr Forbes’s Bill.
