“BALDWIN THE TERRIBLE” TURNS ON PERSECUTORS .
Displays Talent For Invective Unsuspected In So Meek A Mam
(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) * (Received March 19, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, March 18. The “ Morning Post ” says Mr Baldwin is stronger, in his leadership as a result of his attack on his opponents. Moreover, he has retorted upon one of his assailants with a talent for invective which the world did not suspect in so meek a man.
The “Daily Telegraph” says Mr Baldwin’s performance has no parallel in British political history for a full century. His silence only encouraged his adversaries, but yesterday he paid the score in full.
The “Daily Herald” comments: “In one hour Mr Baldwin returned with interest seven years’ personal attacks by the Press barons. It was as Baldwin the Terrible that he subdued three thousand cheering people to silence in a speech without precedent in our generation.” The “ News-Chronicle ” expresses the opinion that Mr Baldwin’s language was justified as far as the attack of which he complained was concerned, but it questions whether such action and speech will promote the decencies of public life.
CONGRATULATIONS ON QUEEN'S HALL SPEECH. LONDON, March 17. On his return to the House of Commons from the Queen’s Hall not only the Conservatives but the Liberal and Labour members congratulated Mr Baldwin. All equally detest the Press vendetta of which Mr Baldwin has been, made the victim. Lord Rothermere, replying to Mr Baldwin, says that he “began the mudslinging.” Either Mr Winston Churchill or Mr Neville Chamberlain would be more capable than Mr Baldwin to conduct the Conservative policy. “Lord Beaverbrook and I are working not to split the Conservative Party, but to bring it back to real Conservatism,” h• said.
