FIRE AT A MINE THREATENS WORKS

HOSE PIPES OUT OF ORDER; WATER SCARCE (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) BRISBANE, March 18. The Mount Morgan mine works are threatened with destruction by a fire which began near the smelter binns on Monday night. The hose pipes were out of order owing to the long period of idleness experienced by the mine, and the pumps required replacements. A strong wind sprang up just .when the fire-fighters appeared to be getting the upper hand, which drove the flames into the woodwork in all directions. The water supply is rapidly being exhausted. A large crude oil tank and concentrators are in the path of the fire which, if it jumps the break that has been made, will wipe out the works completely.
