EIGHT-OAR CREW LEAVE TO-MORROW
CANTERBURY HAVE FAIR CHANCE AT DUNEDIN. Bound for the interprovincial eightoar rowing championship on Dunedin Harbour on Saturday, the Canterbury eight-oar crew will leave Christchurch to-morrow morning". The members are all fit, and their showing in training on the Sumner Estuary has given rise to hopes that they will bring back with them the Halyburton Johnston Cup, a large silver trophy, and £25 in prize money. The trophy and prize money go to the association which enters the winning crew. Four crews will row in the event this year—Canterbury, Otago, Marlborough and Auckland. The course will be of three miles. Canterbury won the first interprovincial eight-oar event in the season 1927-28, and Otago, the present champions, have held the ascendancy in the last two seasons. The Canterbury crew are as follow: G. Rushworth (stroke), F. H. Thompson, C. A. Stiles, S. W. Cox, J. Gilby, A. A. Andrews, J. M’Giffen, G. Jordan (bow). The crew will row in the boat which was damaged last week by striking a submerged stake in the Estuary. The craft has been repaired, but it is stated that it will never have the same buoyancy as before. CHAMPIONSHIP CREWS ARRIVE IN DUNEDIN. (Special to the “Star.”) DUNEDIN, March 18. The Marlborough and Auckland crews have arrived for the eight-oar championships on Saturday. The Canterbury crew will arrive to-morrow.
