TWO CHINESE SOLD BOX .OF BEANS, SHORT-WEIGHT.
Two Chinese market gardeners appeared before Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., this morning, charged with selling or causing to be sold boxes of beans short of the quantity represented and contrary to the provisions' of the Weights and Measures Act, 1925. Lim Sing, of Sparks Road, Halswell, and Sim Lim, of Birchfield Avenue, Shirley, represented by Mr Champion, both pleaded guilty and were fined £1 each and costs. At first there was some difficulty with Sim Lim, who, grinning broadly, said that he knew nothing about anything. The matter was adjusted, however, during a short adjournment, when the two Chinese and their counsel had a conference. Mr N. H. Graham, who represented the Inspector of Weights and Measures, said that apparently a set allowance was made on the weight of the boxes by defendants, but in some cases the weights varied. The Department wished to shed some publicity on the prosecutions as a deterrent to .others.
