BULK PURCHASE OF SCHOOL COAL URGED.
The coal bills of the primary schools in the winter time are very heavy, and a suggestion was made, at the meeting of the delegates to the School Committees* Association last evening, that it would be a good thing if the coal and coke were provided by the State Coal Office at wholesale rates. The Woolston School last year paid out £7B for fuel. The secretary informed the delegates that the Education Board had taken the matter up on its own initiative. Mr West said that one of the troubles of the bulk system was that some schools liked different coals, for central heating. “ The only way to work the bulk system,” said Mr Cole, “ is for the Education Board to make it compulsory that the coal be bought through the board.” In answer to a question from a delegate, the chairman said that a truck load was six tons, but not many schools had storage for such a large quantit\B One member said that his committee was building a larger shed so that the extra quantity could be housed. A motion that the fuel be provided by the State Coal Depot was carried.
