RELIEF WORK FOUND FOR UNEMPLOYED

It was reported by the Ashburton Unemployment Committee that the County Council have engaged twelve men and would be putting on six more on Friday. Four men had been given work by the Borough Council, and five more would be engaged on Friday. It was stated that four men had been given work under the No. 2 scheme. Donation to Relief Fund. At yesterday’s meeting the committee of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association passed a resoluction of sympathy with those who had suffered injury and loss in the Hawke’s Bay earthquake disaster, all members standing in silence. On the motion of Messrs H. C. Barton and A. P. Turner, the sum of £lO 10s was voted to the relief fund. Lodge Meeting. The C. R. (Bro. J. Lochhead) presided over a good attendance at the meeting of the Court Ashburton No. 6729, A.O F. The question of helping the relief funds was discussed and it was resolved that the district executive be advised that the Court recommended that a levy be struck on all members throughout the Canterbury district. At the fortnightly meeting of the Star of Ashburton Lodge, No. 14, the A.D., Brother G. IT. Dyer presided. The action of the executive in giving £lO to the Earthquake Relief Fund was confirmed. Brother Dyer forwarded his resignation as Arch Druid and Trustee as he was leaving the district. Brother G. Solway was elected A.D. and Brother Dobbin trustee in his stead. P.G.P. Brother Fisher, of the Oak of Sydenham Lodge, addressed the members on proposals on the Grand Lodge Order paper which his lodge were bringing forward. He was accorded a vote of thanks for his action. After the meeting a social was held, when P.D.P. Brother W. Samuels presented Brother Dyer with a P.A. collar and case from the members. Brother Samuels spoke eulogisticallv of Brother Dyer’s work for the lodge, both in and out of the lodge room. Reference vfs also made to the departure of Brother W. Bentley.
