PROGRESS LEAGUE OFFERS SERVICES.
RECEIVING DEPOT IS OPENED AT BRIGHTON.
The executive of the Canterbury Pro. gress League, at a meeting last evenmg* passed a resolution of sympathy with the people of Hawke’s Bay, and decided to offer their services to the Government for the organisation of relief. in Canterbury. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., said that an appeal had been made for food and clothing, and he thought that it might be possible for the League to do something by getting into communication with, the local bodies. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr J. 11. Shaw) said that a depot would be opened by the Borough Council in New Brighton in the morning for the receipt of food, clothing and bedding. The catastrophe was the worst in the history of New Zealand. lie thought that the League might urge the Government to provide a national earthquake fund. By diverting a percentage of the insurance premiums to the Government a fund would be provided tc meet any disaster. Mr C. H. Clibborn said that the League might place its organisation at the services of the Government in the work of providing relief. .On Mr Clibborn’s motion, it was decided to offer the League’s services for the organisation of relief in Canterbury. Referring to Mr Shaw's suggestion that a national earthquake fund be established, he thought it would be better if it were held over for discussion at another meeting. Mr Shaw said that he was quite agreeable to the proposal being placed on the agenda paper for the next meeting. He considered that it was a worthy matter for the League to take up. Further Offers. The W est Coast Licensed Victuallers executive last night voted a first donation of £100; and the Grevmouth Borough Council voted a first donation of £IOO. The Nelson City Council is sending £IOO to Napier and the same to Hastings as a first instalment. The “K ” factory at Nelson last night shipped six thousand tins of jam and three thousand tins of tomato soup as a contribution towards the relief of distress. The tobacco growers are organising to send relief to the tobacco factory workers. The Dunedin City Council last night decided to postpone the question of contributing to the earthquake fund until, the return of the Mayor from Wellington. It broke a rule which has been strictly adhered to in the past and decided for the first time to allow charges to be made for Sundav entertamments in aid of the fund. The Otago Dailv Times ” headed a fund tQ-day with £250.
