NUMBER OF WORKLESS INCREASES IN TEMUKA.
Unemployment in Temuka is more serious than was anticipated a few weeks ago. Many farmers are making use of the members of their families for harvesting, thus reducing expenditure. A delegate appointed by the unemployed has been unsuccessful in getting into touch with the member for the district, Mr T. D. Burnett. The delegate later produced a letter from Mr Clyde Carr, member for Timaru, in reference to an application made by the men for work at Orari Gorge. Mr Carr pointed out that 164 men were waiting at the Timaru Labour office last week, and it could be seen that the position was bad in his own electorate, outside of which he could not see how he could ask for preference for men. The only thing for the Temuka unemployed men to do was to register regularly every fortnight, and if he (Mr Carr) got more work going, the Temuka men could probably come in. He trusted matters would improve when the Unemployment Board was functioning properly. In the meantime there are over sixty men out of employment in Temuka. Druids’ Lodge. At the meeting of the Lily of Temuka Lodge of Druids there was a large attendance, including visiting brothers from the Endeavour Lodge (Oamaru) and the Ivanhoe Lodge (Dunedin). A vote of thanks was accorded the ladies who gave their services in connection with the Christmas tree for the children of Lodge members. The retiring Social Committee was accorded thanks.
