The engagement is announced of Dorothy Evelyn, third daughter of Mr and Mrs L. G. Laby, of Christchurch, to Joseph, only son of Mr and Mrs J. Brown, of Christchurch. The engagement is announced of Vera Maud, second daughter of Mr and Mrs W. G. Slater, “ Randolph ”, Sumner, and John Alfred Greenall, of Hanmer Springs.

Mrs John Deans is the guest of Mrs H. B. Gordon, Lower Hutt. Miss N. Reeves, Montreal Street, is visiting Mrs Barton, Featlierston. Miss F. M’Hutchison, Dunedin, is visiting Christchurch, and is the guest of Lady Ward. Mrs Arthur Grigg, Ashburton, is spending a holiday with Mrs Harold Baty, Masterton. Miss Josephine Elworthy, Timaru, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs A. P. White, Hawke’s Bay, is returning home this week. Miss Mina Ward, Manchester Street North, has returned from a short visit to Mrs Alister MacKenzie, Clayton Station, Fairlie. Dr G. E. Gillett and Mrs Gillett, Kaiapoi, who have been on a holiday visit to Hundalee, returned home yesterday. Mr and Mrs Ross Lascelles and their small son, Papanui Road, who have been spending the holidays at Sumner, have returned to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. G. Collins and family, Eversleigh Street, who have been spending a month in Sumner, have returned to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Endell Wanklyn and family, Rossall Street, returned yesterday from a camping holiday spent at Peraki, Banks Peninsula. Mr - and Mrs Pat Ward, who have been spending a holiday in England, are leaving for New Zealand to-day. Mr Ward was married in America a few months ago. Miss Aileen Barton, Featherston, who is a keen aviator, piloted her ’plane from Masterton, and arrived in Christchurch this morning. She is the guest of Miss Barbara Gould, “ Avonbank,” Fendalton.
