NORTH ISLAND TOURNEY. Per Prese Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 8. Play in the North Island lawn tennis championships was continued to-day in windy weather. The courts were slow after yesterday’s rain. There were several surprises in the morning’s play, notably the victory of Mrs E. Smith (Wanganui) over Miss M. Macfarlane (Auckland), 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The match was a battle of tactics, Mrs Smith wearing Miss Macfarlane down with beautiful placements in the second and last sets. Exciting play was seen when V. N. Hubble and Miss O. J. Taylor beat T. Rhodes-Williams and Miss Todd, 3-6, 7-5, 7 5. C. B. Webster (New Plymouth) gained a notable victory over M. L. Lampe (Wanganui), 6-3, 7-5. Further results:— Men’s Singles. Second Round. L. H.
