44-HOUR WEEK MEANS LOSS TO N.S.W. RAILWAYS

SYDNEY. January 7. The Railway Commissioners of NewSouth Wales announce that the reintroduction by the Government of the forty-four hour week on the railways will involve an added expenditure of £475,000 a year. A large number of men are working under Federal awards which prescribe forty-eight hours for a working week Thus they will receive pay for the four hours which are not worked. The anticipated deficit on the railways by June 30 is £1,000.000.
