Of the younger generation of players who are making their debut in Shield games this season, R. the Kil birnie colt, is doing well for Wellington. He scored 32 not out and 22 against Otago, and 14 against Canterbury, and secured four wickets for 43 and three for 62 against Otago, and one for 17 and two for 105 against Canterbury, which gives him ten wickets for 227 runs, an average of 22.70 per wicket. This is a distinctly good performance for a youngster. Canterbury has a good boy in S. G. Lester, who scored 35 against Auckland, and 4 and 49 against Wellington, and captured four wickets for 21 runs and two for 73 against Auckland, and two for 36 against Wellington, giving him eight wickets for 130 runs, an average of 16.25 per wicket (says a Wellington critic). The death of Mr Thomas Powell, a veteran of the Indian Mutiny, at the age of ninety, is reported from Hast ings. He was born in Chippenham, Wiltshire, and in 1858 joined the army and went to India. In 1869 he was invalided out of the army, and came to New Zealand with his wife.
