MORE ACCIDENTS ON ROADS NOW.
NEED FOR DRIVERS TO EXERCISE CAUTION.
Although no statistics are available as yet, the chief traxic inspector (Mr 11. Macintosh) states that all classes of motor accidents showed a big increase during the past year. Nearly a score of people have been killed, and the less serious accidents have run into hundreds. Motor-cycles have been concerned in a large number of these, Mr Macintosh states, and in a number of cases pillionriders have been injured. Christchurch had had the lowest number of fatal accidents of the four centres for several years, said Mr Macintosh, but this year he thought it would be well up the scale. The increase, however, was general throughout New Zealand, and was due to the greater number of motorvehicles being used. It was a hard thing on which to keep a check, he said, for however good the regulations, the human element was always a factor. “People will not understand.” said Mr Macintosh, “that when they are driving a machine at a high rate of speed they have control of a terrific force, and should be correspondingly cautious.”
