DRASTIC OVERHAUL OF DEPARTMENTS.

ECONOMY COMMITTEE SITS FOR FIRST TIME. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. January 6. The special Economy Committee, which the Government set tip to make a drastic overhaul of all departments of State, from the Prime Minister’s downwards, is sitting to-day for the first time. The committee is to investigate and report from time to time to Cabinet on further limitation and economy of State services. The personnel comprises the Minister of Native Affairs (Sir Apirana Ngata), the deputy-leader of the Legislative Council (the Hon R. Masters), the Minister of Railways (the Hon W. A. Veitch), the head of the Treasury (Mr Park), and the Public Service Commissioner (Mr Verschaffelt). In a statement last month the ActingPrime Minister, the Hon E. A. Ransom, said the country was faced at present with a substantial reduction in the national income, and expenditure would have to be adjusted accordingly. The position was a most difficult one for any Government, but Cabinet was bringing the whole economic situation under review. The Government fully recognised that the question of lower rates and taxes was involved in this pressing problem and the Economy Committee would make a searching investigation and overhaul of all departments.
