ON THE WATER

(By

“JASON."

PIsTuBES. January 21—Christchurch Regatta. January 22—Wanganui Regatta. February 28—New Zealand Championship Regatta at Wellington. The selection committee for the Canterbury representative eight-oar crew will meet again on Thursday, and will probably select another trial crew for a row on the Avon. The interprovincial eight-oar championship will be rowed at Dunedin. a The Akaroa Regatta on New Year’s Day was one of the most successful of recent years, and credit is due to the Regatta Committee for the complete arrangements made. The races were all started well up to time. The visiting rowers greatly appreciated the kindness of Mr E. X. Le Lievre in allowing his grounds to be used for the unpacking of boats. The grounds are situated right on the waterfront, and (ho boats had to bo carried only a short distance before being launched. ♦,* *.* jj The suggestion has been made that the Akaroa Regatta programme should be started at 10.30 a.m.. instead of at It a.m. If the events were still kept up to time this would mean that competitors and spectators would be able to bathe and have a look round the holiday town before leaving on their return home. Less interval between the events would also help to sustain the interest of the spectators. for the D.C.L. Cup. Their victory is all the more meritorious in view of the fact that the club are just recovering from the setback of some two seasons ago. Last year they put up some fallperformances, and this season has seen a great revival of interest in this oldestablished organisation. Union won the youths* single sculls, the youths’ double sculls, were second in the senior four and the senior pair-oar, and third in the senior pair-oar, in which event the club had two crews entered. One of the surprises of the regatta, as far as those rowers outside of Akaroa were concerned, was the fine form of the Akaroa maiden crews, who won all three events in their division and finished up in third running for Shield points. Union obtained 22 points, Avon 21, and Akaroa 19. D. Reid, W. W. Reid. R. Keegan and F. Fyfe were responsible for the wins in the maiden class, all rowing well and showing th<» beneficial effects of good coaching by, the club captain, Mr George Whelch. who has been untiring in his efforts to help the club along. Avon won the senior four-oar event comfortably, as well as the senior pairoar (C. A. Stiles. F. H. Thompson). This club usually does very well at regattas, and has made a good start for the season. « Rowers have done little work on the river since the Akaroa Reagtta, most of them still being on holiday, or not being able to make up full crews. The sport will be prominent on the river again short Ij'.
