The origin of the term “windfall.” as applied to an unexpected piece of luck, is as follows: Some of the English nobility were forbidden by the tenure of their estates to fell the timber, all the trees being reserved for the use of the Royal Navy. All trees which were blown down were excepted. Hence a good wind was often a Godsend.
