Recently selected as the New Zeaand Rhodes Scholar for 1931, J- E. Lovelock has started the season’s serious racing on the track in most successful fashion, the Otago University man winning the 440 yards, 880 yards, and one mile events from back marks at the Waipiata amateur meet in Central Otago in decisive fashion. Merit is given to the performances by reason of the fact that Lovelock beat C. J. Thompson, one of Otago’s best middle distancers and an ex-Canter-bury runner, in the two middle distance races. Lovelock won the Otago mije in 4min 30sec last season, and twice improved upon the time.
