In the semi-finals of the Miramar Golf Club’s open golf tournament today, J. L. Petley beat J. H. Drake, 5 and 3, and the Rev C. V. Rooke beat L. Buist, 3 and 1. The theatres established in Europe had at first no side walls, and were not provided with movable scenery. When the “Mysteries” were represented on the stage the actors took their seats on benches along the sides. When called upon to appear in the piece, an actor rose from his seat, and resumed it again at his exit. At a later period the representation of a tragedy was indicated by black hangings round the stage, and the changes of the scene were shown by simply fixing inscriptions, upon each of which was written the name of the place represented in the action of the piece. This was the mode pursued in Shakespeare's time. William Rennie, a porter, aged thirty-three years, was remanded by Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning to appear on January 7 on a charge of stealing £4, the property of the Christchurch Unemployed Workers’ Union, on December 29.
