A DECORATIVE CAKE OR SANDWICH COVER
A decorative cake or sandwich cover is always handy when the weahter is hot and the flies troublesome. You need a tin and wire meat cover, which you must first of all treat inside and out to two generous coats of gilt paint and allow it to dry thoroughly. Then camouflage the tin rim by sewing strands of emerald-green raffia thickly over it. Raffia Flowers. Next comes the working of some rose sprays on the cover itself, just as your fancy dictates. Flowers, buds, leaves, and stems are worked in single stitches, the rose raffia being used for the former, and the green of the border for the latter. The big blossoms are worked in lazydaisy stitches, ten petals to a rose, and centred with closely-cut strands of mixed yellow and brown raffia. To make the centres, wind a thread of brown and yellow together round an inch wide strip of card and slip off without cutting. Fold flat, and stitch firmly over the middle of the little skein so formed to the centre of the rose, then cut the threads to within a quarter of an inch, to form a close tuft. Finish With Doll’s Head. All that is now left to do is to wind the little handle ring, firmly and closeb r , with a strand of green and the dainty cover is finished. Or again, you may gild the cover and sew a doll’s head firmly in place on top, finishing off with a satin bow. The doll’s heads are sold at any store.
