OTAGO BATSMEN MAKE A STAND.
AUCKLAND REQUIRE I 128 RUNS TO WIN. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, January 3. The weather was dull but dry and warm for the resumption of the Plunket Shield cricket match Auckland v. Otago. Auckland, in their first innings, made 331. Otago replied with 135. They followed on and made 323, leaving Auckland with 128 to get to The wicket appeared in good shape for the northern express bowlers, Cleverley and Mathieson, who opened the day’-s attack against Alloo and Hawkesworth. The balls were not coming up so dangerously as they were yesterday. Alloo increased his overnight score to 16 b} r pulling Cleverley’s first ball around to the square leg boundary. Hawkesworth batted cautiously and Alloo later added three with a neat late cut, also at Cleverley’s expense. Hawkesbury hit a no-ball from Cleverley into the hands of Mathieson at square leg and, apart from this slight deviation from routine, there was little else worthy of note in the ensuing ten minutes’ play. Steady Play. With plenty of time at their command and everything to gain by a determined stand, the Otago batsmen were hitting out at loose stuff only. Then Alloo raised a cheer by belting Cleverley twice in succession to the leg pickets. Hawkesworth, who was bat- . ting well, livened up, and, when 29 runs had been added in 25 minutes, Wensley relieved Cleverley. Hawkesworth ran a four j 6ff his fourth ball. At the other end, j M’Coy came on in place of Mathieson, and a little later a I leg bye brought 300 up. The next moment Alloo, who had fought a determined knock, got his leg well in front to Wensley and was out, 301—^9—37. Lemin, last man in, broke his duck with a single off M’Coy, followed by a vigorous high drive to the off boundary off the same bowler. The crowd became enthusiastic when the tail-enders carried the score past the 310 mark. Shortly before noon, when the total was. 323, a smart return from deep point by Mills resulted in Lemin being run out. Hawkesworth again carried his bat for 27. Auckland Bat Again*Auckland batted at noon,Stills and Postles taking strike to the bowling of Dickinson and Badcock. Dickinson kept a good length and Badcock was nipping off the pitch at a greater pace than earlier in the match. The scores of each batsman came as a result of polished, behind the wicket strokes, neither showing any signs of being uncomfortable. Mills’s timing was perfect. Keeping the ball low, he dealt swiftly and smoothly with all types of bowling. His handling of the off theory was a treat to watch. Postles worked on the straight bat method. Blunt and Elms were tried, but there was not the slightest change in the outlook. Mills Clean Bowled. Then Mills stepped out to have a go at Blunt and was clean bowled. 48—1—31. Weir, the incomer, scored mainly in singles. About a quarter of an hour before the luncheon adjournment, a shower came down. Five minutes later the adjournment was taken. Auckland then had one down for 56. Interrupted by Rain. Heavy rain throughout the adjournment prevented the resumption of play till 2.15. Another heavy shower drove them in at 2.25, when the tally was one for 75 (Postles not out 29, Weir not out 14). „ Play was later abandoned for the day. Steady rain has fallen since 2.30.
