CHRISTMAS GRANT FOR UNEMPLOYED.
FIRST MEN TO START ON MONDAY MORNING. ' That a special Christmas grant had been received from the Unemployment Board to provide work for those men who have been unable to find jobs over the past fortnight, and that the men would be selected on Monday morning was the bare statement issued this morning by the Finance Committee of the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee. There were present at the meeting: Mr E. 11. Andrews (in the chair), Mrs A. I. Fraer, the Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer), Messrs W. W. Scarff, F. W. Crampton, G. Hayden, W. T. Foster, W. E. Leadley, J. W. Beanland, A. R. Galbr&ith, G. Harper, J. S. Barnett and P. R. Climie (secretary). Messrs N. H. Graham and E. G. Queree represented the Labour Department. The meeting went into committee and discussed the scheme for an hour and a half. A proposal was advanced that the money should be expended by way of grant, but it was decided to provide work. i The chairman ihade it clear that work would be provided only for those men who had had no work for the past fortnight. The men will be selected by the Labour Department and a start will be made by the first batch on Monday morning.
