SCHOOL COMMITTEES REGISTER PROTEST.

! DEPARTMENT HOLDS UP SUBSIDIES ON WORK, Per Press Association. HASTINGS, December 20. Criticism of the Government’s action in refusing to pay subsidies until after April 1 next was voiced at a combined meeting of representatives of the school committees of Hastings and surrounding districts held last night. The following resolution was carried: “ That this meeting of combined school committees protests against the Education Department withholding subsidies on approved works. While we are quite prepared to allow subsidies to stand over until the financial position of the country improves, we consider that when the Department has given approval for work to proceed and committees have undertaken, or completed, that work, payment should' be made. To now state that payments cannot be made until at least April 1 is a distinct breach of faith, and we consider that we have not only a moral, but a legal claim against the Department. Will the Department advise school committees how they are to meet liabilities after completing the authorised works ? ”
