TAXIS ALLOWED USE OF ’PHONES.
MAIN STANDS ARE NOW JOINED WITH “FEEDERS.”
Six telephone cabinets for the use of taxi-drivers were placed in position in the city to-day. About six months ago, the City Council decided to abolish all taxi telephones, but the By-laws Committee have relented to the extent of permitting cabinets to be placed on the streets so that cars on “ feeder ” stands can be called up from the main stands. The cabinets are placed so that communication can be established between the main stand at the Grand T heatre and the “ feeder ” in Cambridge Terrace and between the main ataml at the Bank of New Zealand and the “feeders” in Hereford Street and Latimer Square. They cannot be used for the general public to call taxis, but it is the hope of the drivers that eventually they will tie permitted to have the use of public telephones again. The new system limits the drivers on the main stands to calling up drivers on the “ feeders ” so that when a car leaves the main stand, another can take ttr place.
