LATE SPORTING.

ELLERSLIE GALLOPS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 20. Conditions were ideal for training work at Ellerslie this morning, the bulk of the gallops being carried out on the course proper, where the poles were 40ft cut from the rails. The going was fast, and several excellent gallops were recorded, the best performances being registered by Nightmarch, who put up a first-class effort over a mile: Count Palatine, Star Stranger. Cylinder and Vertigem, who each went seven furlongs. The best times established by sprinters were those of Hunting Day, Royal Tea, Tenterden and Autopay. Course Proper. Lady Pam was first to work, and was timed* to run six furlongs in lmin IS 4-ssec. Cape Gold assisted her over the last five furlongs, which were traversed in lmin 4sec. Eager Rose ran the last six furlongs of her work in lmin 18 3-osec, doing it vrell. Hunting Day completed a half-mile sprint in 49 3-ssec. Love Song got to the end of six furlongs in lmin 19sec, finishing on well. Karangapai and Leasehold were together in front of Creina's King after completing six furlongs in Imm 20 3-ssee. The Railway Handicap candidate, Tenterden, ran half a mile in 49 3-ssec, doing the work nicely. Star Stranger and Cylinder began from the old mile post and finished up the last seven furlongs of their task in lmin 31 3-osec. There was very little difference between them at the finish. Star Stranger was going in good style. Tetrachate and Foot Rule ran five furlongs in lmin 3 4-ssec practically together. . Gay Crest and Sir Mond jumped off at the mile post and, after running the first half in 51 3-ssec, finished up in lmin 44sec. Gay Crest pleased better, bfirg a length and a half in front. Royal Tea displayed a lot of speed over five furlongs, which he covered in lmin 3 2-ssec. He went particularly well. Grecian and Appledore were on terms over six furlongs in lmin 21 2-osec. Brampton, Imperial Prince and Tambourine finished together over a mile in lmin 55sec. Titanette was a shade in front of Speedfast over four furlongs in 51 4-5 sec. Praetor was in front of * Rafflight over five furlongs in lmin 4sec. Merry Lu was allotted a seven-fur-long task. She ran the first three in 39 3-ssec, and completed the task in lmin 35sec. Count Palatine and Vertigern jumped off at the seven-furlong post, running the first three furlongs in 38-4-ssec and the full distance in lmin 31 4-ssec. Count Palatine, who had the better of the weights, was going much easier at the finish. Neil and Alloy were together after running four furlongs from a flying start in 51 4-ssec. Royal Baby had Autopay as a companion over three furlongs, which took oSsec. They were on terms at the finish. After breakfast, Steady Fire was in front of Llanore over six furlongs in lmin IS 3-ssec. Steady Fire went well. The best gallop was credited to Nightmarch (B. Reed), who began from the mile post with Bennie to assist him. He ran the first furlong in 13 l-ssec, three in 38sec and reached the half-mile post in 50 3-ssec. True Shaft joined in at this stage, and Nightmarch and he finished together. The time for the mile was lmin 42 l-ssec. The last four furlongs were covered in 51 3-osec. Nightmarch galloped very evenly throughout, and was going particularly well at the finish. Bennie was eased up over the last part. Gay Idea and Bizarro ran three furlongs in 39 4-ssec and six furlongs in lmin 20sec together. Gay Cockade (M’Crae) was sent over a mile and a quarter with Glenhaupo to assist him over the last half-mile. He ran the full distance in 2min 17 2 ssec, the last round in 2min 7 2-ssec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 34sec and the final half in 52sec. TAKANINI NOTES. (Special to the “Star,”) AUCKLAND, December 20. Both the grass and the plough were in use at Takanini this morning. The poles on the grass were close in and the horses covered the exact distance. The going was excellent. On the plough, Sargon did about a mile and a half of pace work, hitting out with more freedom than usual. In the Shade jumped away at the mile and three furlongs post, and, after covering the first three furlongs in 41 sec, increased the pace. Eaglet joined him over the last five furlongs, the pair being together at the finish. The last mile took lmin 44 2-ssec, and the mile and three furlongs 2min 25 2-ssec. Rosshire, after doing pace work, finished over the last three furlongs in 44sec. Vandyke covered his last two furlongs in 24 4-osec. On the grass. White Wings and Envoy ran five furlongs in lmin 4 3-5 sec, the first two taking 24 2-ssec and the first three 36 4-osec. White Wings was under restraint over the last three furlongs and the gallop was an impressive one. Ammon Ra completed five furlongs in lmin 2 3-ssec. after taking 25sec for the first two. The Chief Ruler—Peut Etre filly picked him up over the last three, but got a couple of lengths’ advantage at the start, which Ammon Ra had decreased considerably when the post was reached. Fedora broke away about a length and a half ahead of High Comedy, but the pair were together at the end of half a mile run in 49 3-ssec. Speedmint was going nicely alongside Exaggeration at the finish of four furlongs in 50 2-ssec, after running the first two in 24 l-ssec. Chief Joy was about a length and a half behind Refresher (Stewart) at the start of a six furlong sprint. The first three were covered in 36 2-osec. and the full distance in lmin losec. Chief Joy wae about a length and a half in front at the finish. It was a good gallop on the part of Chief Joy. Tea Chat ran five furlongs in lmin 6 4-ssec, time that could have been considerably improved upon as he was pulled up to almost a walk when the post was reached. Havaspot was a length in front of Smithfield at the conclusion of six furlongs. run in lmin 16 4-ssec, the first two furlongs occupying 25sec. Havaspot worked well. Clopton held a slight lead throughout a seven furlong gallop with Ti Tree, who was left behind in lmin 29 3-ssec. The first two furlongs took 25sec and the first half mile 48 4-sscc.

A five-seater Gray sedan and a Gold Band taxi were both damaged in an accident at the intersection of Holly Road and Springfield Road this morning. The sedan, driven by Miss Cox, was going north along Springfield Road and the taxi travelling west along Holly Road, and they colb'ded almost head on.
