AUSTRALIA DEFEAT WEST INDIES TEAM
(United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) ADELAIDE, December 16. Australia won the first test match with the West Indies team by ten wickets. The weather was ideal and the attendance was small. With the addition of 4 6 runs the three remaining West Indies batsmen were dismissed. Grant doggedly brought his score to 71 after a masterly innings of 160 minutes. He hit six fours. The innings lasted 225 minutes. Australia was 16D runs In arrears. Ponsford and Jackson opened cautiously. Then the former settled down to brilliant cover strokes and late cuts. Jackson was subdued, the pair taking 52 minutes to make 52. Scott’s leg breaks were mastered, and Jackson livened tip. making a series of magnificent late cuts. He was dropped at
point by Francis, when 33, off Scott. Ponsford stepped out to Griffiths when 46 and narrowly escaped being stumped. Jackson then developed a forceful array of attractive strokes, the bowlers being ineffective. The hundred was up in 106 minutes. Eleven runs were needed at the tea adjournment, which was noj taken, the crowd clamouring for the batsmen to play on. Jackson hit the winning four to the leg side, off Constantine. The Indies fielding showed deterioration. Ponsford hit five fours and one five. Jackson hit three fours. Scores:— WEST INDIES. First innings 296 Second Innings. CANTERBURY SCHOOLS PLAY AT GREYMOUTH. (Special to the “Star.”) GREYMOUTH, December 17. The weather was ideal when, the boys’ matches commenced to-day. In the senior game, Canterbury are playing the West Coast third grade representatives. At the luncheon adjournment, West Coast had 04 for four wickets. Playing against Greymouth Technical, the Canterbury junior team had scored 90 for five wickets (Thomson 35, Roberts 40 not out). A DRAWN MATCH. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 17. The annual cricket match between King’s College and Mount Albert Grammar School resulted in a draw. As in King’s inning’s high scores were registered by the Mount Albert boys, Everson and Spence scoring 143 and 85 respectively. Mount Albert scored 295 for the lost of seven wickets, as compared with King’s first innings total of 392. MARYLEBONE PLAY TRANSVAAL TEAM. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) The cricket match between Christ's College and Old Collegians, which was to have commenced yesterday, has now been definitely abandoned.
