YOUNG BOYS SHOT TWO WHITE SWANS.
WOULD INCREASE FINE, SAYS MAGISTRATE.
Two youths,'James Lee and Robert W. Mann, had a costly day’s shooting at Waipara recently. During their expedition they shot two white swans. For this offence they were both fined £2 and costs £2 14s 6d, by Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Mr Gresson appeared for the Accli* matisafcon Society. lie said that the bovs had been on a pig-shooting expedition to Waipara. While there they saw two white swans and shot them. The swans had nine cygnets In a letter to the secretary of the society the boys said that they heard a noise in the rushes and fired into them. They were frightened when they saw what they had done, and went away. Mr Gresson said that they did not try to conceal the matter. The offence was a very serious one. Six of the cygnets had been brought into the gardens, and could probably be reared. “I would make the fine more if I thought they were in a position to pay,” said the Magistrate. The youths were ordered to pay the fine and costs at the rate of £1 a month.
