TRACK WORK AT RICCARTON

An Interesting Morning.

Tuesday. The conditions were ideal for training operations at Riccarton this morning, but there was nothing outstanding about the proceedings. Most of the horses who raced at Ashburton on Saturday had a quiet time, while not many of those who worked were tried out at anything like their best pace. All the galloping was done on the plough, which was in good order, though not particularly fast. P. V. Mason commenced proceedings by working his team the reverse way. Praise, Jaloux and Ilkley went together, but only at strong three-quarter pace, while Pride did a circuit by herself. Footfall covered nine furlongs at a sound pace, taking 2min 1 l-ssec for the journey, while Spoon, Meprisant and Riri went separately over about six furlongs, without being stretched cut. Paquito broke away at the nine furlong post and was picked up by Shatter for the last six. His time for the full journey was lmin sSsec, a useful effort, as he went at an even pace all the way. He pulled up well, with no sign of the soreness which has troubled him at times lately. The two-year-old. Solvent. dashed over three furlongs in 36sec, showing a lot of brilliancy. First Sight ran &ix furlongs alone in lmin 17 2-ssec. while Coroner finished slightly in front of Craigavon over the same ground in lmin 16 2-ssec, a useful effort. Full Feather went twice round, sprinting home the last three furlongs each time. Ball Press was his mate E3]EHi333BE:£ Si 33EE 33 33 33 33 33 33 3

in the first sprint, but he did the second alone. Sharp Thorn and Umpire ran three furlongs up the back, while Owlsflight and Porlock were given steady work. Count Cavour did steady work once round, finishing with a brush down the straight. He moved rather scratchilv. Gustavo went twice round at half pace, sprinting home the last half-mile in 53sec. Don Jose was_ sent over nine furlongs, taking lmin 32sec for the last seven. He went in good stjrie, and finished well. Silver Coot sprinted half a mile up the back, while Noteworthy ran home from the three furlong post in 39 3-ssec. Nightmarch and Sight Draft, working the reverse way, broke away at the winning post. Nightmarch was soon well clear of his mate, who was pulled off at the end of half a mile, which Nightmarch ran in olsec. The champion went on to the seven furlong post, completing his task in lmin 29 4-ssec. It was a smart effort, as he finished on strongly. Ravine and Pangolin were restricted to a working gallop over seven furlongs. Topere did six furlongs comfortably. Sapient following with similar work over five furlongs. Rapina and Martian Spear were associated over six furlongs, while Charmeuse was given similar work, none of them being extended. Loehlaggan was kept to easy pacing. A number of other horses worked, but there was nothing of note about their efforts.
