MAGISTRATE GIVES A WARNING TO OFFENDER
Leonard Iladfield, a contractor, was convicted a month ago in the Traffic Court for using two motor trucks, not licensed under the Heavy Traffic Regulations. This morning he admitted to the Magistrate, Mr E. D. Mosley, that since then he had not licensed the vehicles. He was charged only in respect to one vehicle—failure to register it under the Heavy Traffic Regulations and failure to have it equipped with an unladen weight plate. The chief traffic inspector, Mr H. Macintosh, said that Inspector Marks saw the truck being used on November 24 in Moorhouse Avenue. Hadfield was convicted a month ago, and had done nothing to pay the fees since then, although he had been given every opportunity. His fees were then about £llO. Hadfield had been in the office to take out licenses for this >'ear, but he first had to pay the back fees. Hadfield said that the council for which he was working was meeting today, and he would have money to-mor-row to pay the fees. He had only used the lorry once since he was convicted. He had three trucks altogether. He had lost a lot of money on a contract at Waipara. The Magistrate said that he would adjourn the case until Monday to give defendant the opportunity to pay the fees. “ I will fine 3 7 0 u heavily unless they are paid by then,” he said. “ I can’t, in fairness to other contractors, allow you to go on like this.”
