CHILD’S BODY FOUND IN LOCKED SUITCASE.

(Special to the “Star.”) HOKITIKA, December 8. An inquest was opened yesterday before the District Coroner respecting the death of an illegitimate infant which was reported the previous afternoon. Sergeant King stated that from information received he went to premises in Revell Street at midday on Saturday and obtained possession of a locked suitcase. Later a female patient at the Westland Hospital was interviewed. When the case was opened he discovered the body of a dead child wrapped in clothing. A white handkerchief was tied lightly round the child’s neck. The case and contents were taken to Dr Hopkins for further examination. Dr Hopkins stated that at the request of the police he examined the body. It was that of a female child fully developed. A piece of rag was tied round the neck, moderately tight. At this stage the inquest was adjourned sine die.
