OTAGO HAS WIN OVER CANTERBURY

BROADSIDING THRILLS SEEN AT MONICA PARK. In a series of thrilling races Canterbury was defeated by Otago in the interprovincial broadsiding contest at Monica Park on Saturday night. The contest was remarkably close, Otago winning by 27 points to 26. Canterbury lost the services of one of its team, S. Russell, in the first race of the evening, Russell crashing arid injuring a shouli Otago drew first blood, when 11. i i Mangham scored a runaway victory. • However, the local men soon drew away I and led until the fifth match race, when i the score was 16 points to 14. Young I and Rait put Otago two points in the lead in the next race, and that advantage was maintained until the last lead, when Lunn scored a narrow win. As the times show, the local men were not riding true to form. With the exception of Mangham, local men have bettered the times put up by the Otago men on several occasions. The attendance was again very satisfactory, numbering approximately 6000 people. E. R. Marsh, the captain of the Canterbury team, beat H. Mangham, Otago captain, in the South Island Championship. Mangham spilled out and Marsh’s machine did not go too well after the second lap. However, on the first lap's performance Marsh won on his merits. Young made a great burst and led into the back straight. Blacklock was gaining ground, but Young held on until the slide going into the straight the third time round. Blacklock, on the inside, waited his chance and ran into the straight leading. He went on to win easily. Carter was riding the grass in great style and stalled off Rait for third place. Otago 7, Canterbury 11. Fourth match—H. Mangham 1, E. G. Pyke 2, A. Blair 3. Time—lmin 24 3-5 sec. Mangham once again won as he liked. Marsh 'did not get started and pulled out. Pyke rode well to beat Blair for second place. Otago 11, Canterbury 13. Fifth match—A. Pratt 1, C. Blacklock 2. J. Carter 3. Time—lmin 29sec. Miller went into the lead the first time round and led until the back straight in the third lap. Blacklock was handy second. Miller’s engine, gave out and Blacklock was in the lead- Pratt, seeing the fate of his team-mate, clapped on the pace and rapidly overhauled Blacklock, who had apparently slowed. Pratt won narrowly. Otago 14, Canterbury 16. Sixth match—J. Young 1, A. Rait'2, I P. Lunn 3. Time—lmin 23 l-ssec. Young went away in the first slide with Lunn after him. The next time round Lunn spilled, allowing Rait to get into second place. Lunn restarted, however,
