LAWN TENNIS.

SENIOR COMPETITION. Players in the senior competition were m better form for Saturday’s matches, and consequently spectators were treated to a much brighter display of tennis than on the previous Saturday. Conditions were perfect, and the grass courts were in splendid playing order. All courts were in use at Wilding Park, there being several private matches, as well as the competition games, in progress. Avonslde’s Walk-Over. Avonside, with a strong team in the field, won their match fairly easily from the Linwood team. C. Aligns took his match with Johnston, 6-3, 6-2, but he had to fight every inch of the way. Johnston was in good form, and many times worked Angas for a kill. Angas was not as steady as usiAl, but his ability to find the weaknesses in bis opponent gave him thto victory. Barnett had not much difficulty in" beating W. Goss, anrl Arnold’s short stuff kept Prebble puzzled. Prebble is not yet fit, and is not showing the same promise that he did last year. Glanville was in good form against Field, and was always on top. The Avonside pairs w r on their doubles comfortably. Varsity Wins Again. The Varsity team again won on Saturday, this time from the United second team. Though it was not United’s strongest team, the College players did wry well, losing only one match, and they show promise of developing into a first-class side. Cant continues to show improvement, and his match with B. B. Loughnan was at times a brilliant exhibition. Loughnan was not at his best, but the younger player had always plenty in hand. He struck a bad spell in the second set, after winning the first 6-2. However, he managed to gfet control again, winning 7-5. Andrews fought a hard match against Searle, but the older player kept him on the run, winning an exhausting match, 6-3. 7-9, 1-6. Andrews wasted a good deal of his strength, and needs freer style if he is to go ahead in firstclass tennis. Some Good Matches. There were somte good games in the match between Fendalton and Cashmere, the teams being more evenly matched than in the case of the others. Dymond provided rather a surprise in his defeat of W. S. Somerville, who is three places above him in the ranking list. Dymond went for everything Somerville sent down, and, with Somerville making more mistakes than usual, claimed the first set, 8-6. Somerville got the upper hand in the second . set, his service playing a large part. In the third set, however, Dymond rallied, and took it, 6-3. Browning also played a game out of the box, beating Fisher 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Orbell, who has dropped from seventh to tenth place on the ladder, played a good game on Saturday to beat J. R. Crawshaw, who now ranks sixth, 6-4, 11-9. The heat seemed to suit him better than it suited the Fendalton player. Dymond and Browning played well together in the doubles against Fisher and A’Court, and won, 6-3. 6-4. Fisher was playing well, but A’Court let a lot go by. Results: — CANTERBURY. COLLEGE v.
