Mr A. Leslie Wall (Wellington) is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr F. Salmo (Wellington) is a recent arrival at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr Leo T. Dwan, of Wellington, who is a patient in Lewisham Hospital, is reported to be making a satisfactory recovery. Messrs James L. Ilanly (Norwich, England), 11. W. Taylor (Auckland), C. J. Nathan (Wellington), G. E. Melocco (Sydney), and J. A. Murdoch (Hokitika) are guests at the United Service Hotel. On the occasion of his approaching marriage, Mr Alan Boon, a member of the Christchurch Gun Club, was presented with an electric table lamp and a set of cut glassware. Mr W. R. Heney, who made the presentation, on behalf of the club, wished Mr Boon every success and happiness. Mr S. Percy, of the staff of the Magistrate’s Court, who has been transferred to Taihape, -was met by other members of the staff yesterday and presented with a copy of the Magistrates Court Act. Mr H. A. Young made the presentation, and Messrs E. D Mosley and H. P. Lawry also spoke.
Mr F. E. Hutchinson, lecturer in For; est Utilisation at the Canterbury College School of Forestry, left yesterday morning for the West Coast, where he will spend some time in the customary annual period of research work. Mr C. E. Foweraker, lecturer in Forestry and Botany, who is on holida}’ - , will join Mr Hutchinson at the close of his present leave. The death occurred yesterday morning after a short illness of Allen Stewart Cookson, a well-known old boy of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, at the age of twenty-two. Mr Cookson was prominently connected with sporting activities at the school, particularly with Rugby, cricket, boxing and swimming. After leaving school he was employed as an accountant by R. T. Tosswill and Co. He was a member of the Old Boys’ Football Club and was also well known in life-saving circles. lie was a member of the Taylor’s Mistake Surf Club and of the Linwood Swimming Club. Pilot Officer G. M. Easton, of the Royal Air Force, who is a New Plymouth boy, returned by the Marama, which arrived at Auckland yesterday morning. When flying a Bristol Fighter he crashed at Holton le Moor and was so badly injured that he was in hospital for over seven months. lie has had to resign from the force on pension, as a medical board regarded him as unfit for further service. ,Mr Easton stated that there are about 150 New Zealanders in the Royal Air Force. A few years ago it was easy to join 1 now there was such a long waiting list that it was ahnost impossible to get in. Flying Officer Mathias, of Auckland, who played Rugby for University and for Auckland, was doing well. He played football whenever opportunity offered. Pilot Officer Williams, of Wellington, was playing Rugby for the Air Force team, and had Mso become champion heavy-weight '■*oxer of the force. He had defeated G R. Beamish, who had toured New Zealand recently with the British Rugby team.
