FREEZING WORKS ARE NOW OPENING.
PRICES THIS SEASON LIKELY TO BE LOWER,
An early start has been made in the freezing works of T. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., who opened their season to-day with seventeen slaughtermen employed. Nothing is known at present about the price to be paid for the first drafts of lambs, but advice from Auckland stated that exporters there had dropped their prices from 7id to 6d a lb, which is as low as it has been for some years. Farmers locally this
year hoped for an opening rate of from 8d a lb, dropping back to 7id or 7d. Last season Canterbury farmers received B}d to 83d a lb from exporters at the opening of the season, and the price remained steady until the middle of May, when a drop to 7d took place. Local authorities believe that prices at the opening of the season will probably drop back considerably when the later lambs come on the market, but farmers would like to know what price they are going to get for lambs after Christmas. Opening rates will be in the neighbourhood of 7*d a lb for a 361 b lamb.
